Just One Torch
A downloadable game
This is a 46-page toolkit compiled and edited together from several sources to help a solo player experience Old School Revival (OSR) games like Basic Fantasy or Old School Essentials or other 0D&D inspired games.
This toolkit includes:
- Updated character creation rules
- A short list of moves to provide opportunities for "soft" GM intervention or manipulation to make the game more tense or exciting, but are not necessary for play.
- Sources of inspiration like Shawn Tomkin's excellent Action+Attribute+Thing tables from Dragonbane, Twist mechanics from FORGE by Oliver Fradgley, and travel moves inspired by The Angry GM.
- New combat mechanics that take a different approach than the classic "1 hit can auto-kill multiple 1 HD enemies" where the damage you receive is modified, but the damage you deal is not. This makes it harder to kill you, but also harder for you to kill your enemies, helping to retain the OSR feel
- Survival Mechanics inspired by Kevin Crawford that includes Exposure, Illness, and Exhaustion. As well as Gear Degradation and Repair that forces you to decide just how much punishment you're willing to put up with before retreating from the dungeon.
- Solo Magic rules involving Focuses (expensive) or Blood Magic (dangerous) in case you dont want to play a Mage.
- Encounter tables that will help you design encounters on the fly that are appropriate for your level, but not necessarily survivable if you decide to slug it out. Includes an expanded "what are they doing?" table and a Trouble table to build a narrative encounter beyond just combat.
- A Combat Actions table inspired by Shawn Tomkin's in Ironsworn Delve (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) in case that narrative involves your death.
- A d100 Dungeon Design set of rules that helps you explore a dungeon as you go. Includes:
- Adventure site names inspired by ShadowDark
- Generic Dressing
- Expanded Dressing specific to a location
- Adventure Site Design to get an idea of what the place looks like
- Expanded Contents table to include room Events rather than just encounters
- Detail tables to fill out the rooms with more stuff!
- 2 page investigation rules inspired by Brindlewood Bay to give you more to do than just dive into dungeons
And more!
This is a free toolkit published under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 to help people enjoy this hobby as much as I do. I feel some adjustments I made to other toolkits I have seen make the game run smoother, and provide more opportunities for roleplay. I wanted a system that helped capture the quintessential OSR feel: a normal person against abnormal odds.

Again, it has so many good tables and new concepts (ie: weak/strong hit) to enhance the solo play experience! There is so much inspirations and adventures here! and it's free, amazing!
You should consider selling POD on amazon or lulu. If you don't want to make money from them, you could sell them at cost like Basic Fantasy.
So this is it then? THE solo rpg kit of the time. It has it all
Maybe, depending on what you are after! I am very pleased with it, and unless I come up with a truly brilliant plan, will not be updating it further.
Sorry! I meant it as a compliment. For my solo experiments I uesd to jump back and forth between ironsworn and dragonbane tables but now that you made this I'll have everything in one place. Thank you!
Not to worry, I took it as one. Glad you like it! I have a Dragonbane toolkit, Just One Dragon, more geared towards Dragonbane specifically if you're interested. Has some of the same tables, but many specific to Dragonbane
I found this just as my last torch is sputtering out . . . typing in the dark now . . . managed . . to . . . download . . . . . barely . . . . farewell !. . . . . . . . . :-D
Great stuff!
thank you!
This looks wonderful! I'll try it out for sure. Thank you!
On the character sheet, is the fatigue tracker supposed to be strain instead? The rules suggest that you can accumulate points of strain, but fatigue sounds like a binary condition from how I read it.
Yes. Fatigue and Strain are the same thing. I had originally intended on calling it Fatigue, then decided to just go with what Crawford called it since this is just a toolkit. Seems I never updated the character sheet for that. I will look into it. Thanks!
Awesome! I've been looking for something like this.
Well done!! You managed to really put together the best parts of other solo-centric RPGs into OSR games - something I always wanted to do but couldn't!!! Good job!
Great stuff! Love the "Encounter Builder" section for OSR games, gonna use it for my WhiteBox FMAG game!
